Wanderer's:
I know I have pictures elsewhere of previous
Wanderer's Trips, but decided to put the latest pictures from
the Wanderer's trip to Charleston and Savannah here. We
spent two nights in Charleston and two in Savannah. The
Wanderer's are an interest group in the Smith Mountain Lake
Newcomers, led by Shirley Fry. We can always count on
Shirley to take us "down the road" to fun places.
She keeps us busy from morning to night . Most
of the pictures I took are of people or wild life, and
you'll find mostly people here.

Here's our leader, and tour
guide extroadinaire! Shirley
Fry.
 That's
Joan Teller, Shirley's right hand on the
trip, Shirley, and our wonderful driver,
Dave.
And I'll try to identify the rest
of the gang--unfortunately, I missed a few
people.

few others I can't quite make out. (Sorry,
you-all)
 Trudy
and Andy Hakin and Carol Dorss
No,
they weren't on the bus with us- but aren't
they pretty? Actually they pulled the
carriages.
 A
beautiful day at the Battery, in Charleston
 If
you look just to the left of the 'point' there
is an alligator swimming towards it. We saw
lots of wild life but they all seemed to
be 'camera-shy'!

Well,
he just wouldn't fan out his tail for us,
but he's pretty, just the same- at least
he wasn't bashful.
 Pansies
in the garden at Magnolia Plantation - I
just thought they were pretty and will go
on a card some day.
OK,
I did take one picture of a sight that we
visited. The Tybee Island Lighthouse.
Some of our group actually climbed
to the top. Not Me.
And
here's the whole gang ready to get on board for
the Dinner Cruise in Savannah. I have
additional copies of this (5-1/2 x 8) . Call
me if interested.
Breakfast Club:
One of the Interest Groups in the Smith Mountain
Lake Newcomers is a Breakfast Club. We meet every Tuesday
Morning at 9:00 a.m. at Camper's Paradise. Our numbers
vary from 5 to 15, and although we only meet for about an hour,
I can assure you that lots of good gossip makes its
way to our table. And as you can see from these
pictures, we never know who will show up from week to week.
 Here
is the latest picture of our great Breakfast Club, taken the
day they showered me with farewell gifts. What a wonderful
gang and how I will miss them!

The Scarlet Ladies
Another Interest Group in Newcomers is
The Scarlet Ladies. We meet every three months just for
the fun of it. We have no agenda and no rules.
We are similar to, but not related to an international
group know as the Red Hat Society and wear red hats and purple dresses, in keeping with
the poem, "When I'm an Old Woman" by Jenny Joseph.
( If you ae not familiar with this poem you may read it
by going to her web site: <www.jamaree.com/gpage.html>) Our
most recent function was a "Tea" held at the lovely
home of Marty and Bert Bowers. Members received
invitations to either an Oriental, British or Children's tea
and most of them dressed accordingly. There were three
separate areas of Marty's home decorated accordingly. Bert,
dressed in his tuxedo, served as the butler and directed us
to the correct area as we arrived. The beautiful table
decorations also reflected the themes of the various teas.
 On
the left is one of the tea tables for the oriental guests. Next
is Joan Talbott and myself. My hat is made of a chinese
take-out box filled with rice and two chopsticks.
 Queen
Marty Bowers and her friend greeted us as we arrived. Elneta
Amicucci and Patti O'Bryan were dressed to the nines for
the English Tea.
Pat
Pascuale and Helen Buchanan brought their friends, both
the imaginary and the fuzzy kind. Joan
Talbott, Adele Frischman, ?
 Believe
it or not, that teapot is really a cake
At a table fot for a Queen and posing prettily areBarbaraPeters,
Sue Palmer, ?, Patti O'Bryan, Eileen Kennedy, Cail Carey,
Dorothy Chaney, Evelyn Blume, Jessie Geise and Valerie Brown.
 We
were honored by the appearance of Queen Marty Bowers
and her Royal Butler, Bert Bowers.
Cute
little girls playing dress-up with their favorite toys are
JoAnn Gardell, Elneta Amicucci, MaryJo Hernandez, Carolyn
Coleman, Ellie Anderson and Pat Pascale.
 Ejoying
tasty tidbits on the porch are Lou Mann, Ruth Raymond,
Maritza Guddridge annd Phyllis Nodland
 Some
of these poor little girls didn't have any toys! Seated
at the children's table are Barbara Wright, Dot Esposito
and Nancy Wooley. Behind them are Judy Reap, Jeanette
Chace, Ruth Eaken, Carol B rewer, Henel Buchanan and
Fran Burns.
 And
do we really want to identify the little girl sitting
there all alone?
Our Scarlet Ladies recently enjoyed an
afternoon on the lake aboard the Angelique.

THE WANDERERS
Another
group in the Smith Mountain Lake Newcomers is the Wanderers,
led by Shirley Fry who plans and executes all sorts of trips
for them. The most recent was to the Biltmore Estates
in Asheville, North Carolina on November 17-18.
These next 8 photos were actually
postcards that I scanned, since we were not allowed to take
any photographs. Sorry the quality is not very good.
 This,
of course, is the Biltmore House. When we saw it there
were thousands of luminaries on the grounds in front and
leading up to the mansion.
Even
some of the tables had Christmas Trees! This is the
Breakfast Room. The tree is decorated with turn-of-the century
ornaments, including tussie-mussies and pomander balls,
hand crafted by Biltmore Estate staff for the holiday season.
 Many
of the Christmas trees were decorated in Themes. This
one in the Billiard Room was decorated for the Christmas
season with American Flags as befitting the male domain
within the Biltmore House, where politics were often discussed.
The
Biltmore House was first opened to family and friends on
Christmas Eve in 1895. Presumably they sat down to
dinner at this table in the Banquet Hall.
 A
roaring fire welcomes guests for a quiet evening in the
Library. What do you suppose Mr. Vanderbilt would
say of our modern gas logs?
 The
Music room , like many others, has multiple Christmas trees
to delight the senses. The
grand staircase is festooned with evergreens and velvet
ribbon. A huge kissing ball hangs beneath the swagged
chandelier.
 The
Second Floor Living Hall was a favorite gathering place for
family and friends. Beneath the branches of the festive
Christmas tree are period holiday toys and surprises for
all.

.Gene was co-o-old on the bus so
Shirley covered him with a quilt!

Recognize
anyone?

 More
eager shoppers.
 In
the center
is Shirley who planned and executed the whole trip. To
her right is Joan who assisted her on the trip and Dave
our driver. Thanks to all three of them.
